Who can purchase duty free?
Anyone leaving Canada and entering the USA is entitled to purchase duty free. You must be leaving Canada immediately and have the duty free goods with you when you cross the border. You must be 18 years or older to purchase tobacco products, and must be 21 years or older to take liquor across the border. (See EXEMPTIONS for the amount you can declare within your exemption)
Do I have to pre-pay my order?
Yes. When you are placing your order via the internet, credit card information must be provided in order for the order to be processed and staged for pick-up. You can be assured that the Emerson Duty Free Shop Webstore uses the most up to date security measures to safeguard your personal information.
Should you choose not to pre-order and pre-pay, you can always make your duty free purchase at the time of crossing the border by entering the Emerson Duty Free Shop.
Where do I pick up my order?
* During the winter months (mid-November through March) our Delivery Trailer will not be out at the highway. Please pick up your order instore.
Your order can be picked up between the hours of 6:00 AM and 11:00 PM at Emerson Duty Free Shop on the Canadian side of the border one hour south of Winnipeg on Hwy 75.
When there are border line-ups to cross into the US (usually Fridays and Saturday morning of most weekends and long weekends) your order will be held in the Emerson Duty Free Shop Pre-order Deliver trailer located just south of Canada customs alongside the highway. Trailer staff will be watching for you and will bring your order to your vehicle – no need to get out of line.

When there are no line-ups, the Pre-order Delivery trailer will not be alongside the highway but will be parked in the Emerson Duty free Shop parking lot. In this event, your order can be picked up in the Emerson Duty Free Shop. Enter the shop and indicate to any staff that you are picking up a pre-order, and they will give priority to getting your order from our staging area so that you can quickly be on your way.
Why do you ask for the date and time I expect to cross the border?
Because duty free purchases must immediately leave Canada, Emerson Duty Free will have your order prepared and ready for pick-up at the time you advise you will be crossing.
Why do you ask for my name and license plate #?
Your license plate number and name (as shown on your drivers license) will be used by Emerson Duty Free Shop staff to identify you so that they deliver the correct pre-order to you. If you hold up your pre-order invoice as you approach the Pre-order Delivery trailer to indicate that you have made a pre-order , trailer staff will use your license plate # to locate your order and will bring it to your vehicle – no need to get out of the car.
What happens if my plans change?
If your plans change and you do not come through on the date specified, we will telephone to find out when you plan to travel and will re-stage your order for the revised date or time (if you decide to travel earlier than advised it would be a good idea to telephone or e-mail us – see CONTACTS - so we can have your order ready for you on the earlier date or time). Should you decide not to travel to the US, simply advise us by phone, fax or e-mail and Emerson Duty Free Shop will cancel your order and process a full refund.
What happens if I change my mind on the items pre-ordered?
Your order as placed will be prepared and staged for pick-up. If you change your mind on some items, it will be necessary to enter the Emerson Duty Free Shop to correct the invoice and adjust the items so that you do not have problems entering the US. Should you decide to cancel the entire order, Emerson Duty free Shop will refund the full invoice amount to your credit card. The Pre-delivery trailer staff do not have the facilities or authorization to make changes at the trailer.
Can I bring my duty free purchases back into Canada?
Yes you can. Duty free purchases would be DECLARED in your exemption when re-entering Canada and Canadian exemption regulations would apply (see EXEMPTIONS).
Can I return items after having picked up my pre-order?
Yes you can. The Emerson Duty Free Shop “no hassle” return policy also applies to pre-orders. Simply bring your sales receipt and return the item to the Emerson Duty Free Shop for a full refund.
